Snowflake was the first member of the Shadow Ridge Ranch herd of cattle.  She is a Longhorn-Brangus mix cow, given to the ranch by long-time friends Mal and Sheila Whitt in 2002.

Snowflake is the matriarch of the herd, and acts as the ranch "watch cow."  She notices everything that goes on at the ranch and makes sure things run smoothly.

Thanks to our neighbor's Black Angus bull named Rocky (who visited us on more than one occasion), we have a number of cows (and calves) all jet black - and all indistinguishable from each other.

They all are named "That Black Cow"  because they literally cannot be told apart.

This is another resident member of the herd, appropriately called "WhiteBelly Cow."  She can be distinguished from the rest of her sisters by (you guessed it), her white stomach.  Her third calf is named "Patches" (having slightly less of a white belly than her momma).  Patches is now a momma cow herself!

Snowflake generally has calves that look like clones.  We usually name them "Ice Man."  She did break the mold a couple of times.....and had a jet black little boy.  Her first one was an adventure, as it was born blind - most likely because of a virus.  We bottle fed it, gave it shots, and put salve in its eyes for nearly two weeks.  Then a miracle happened!  He regained his eyesight and (most importantly for us) began nursing!!!  He's since been sold at auction so is most likely someone's hamburger dinner, but it was a nice save.

This handsome fellow is named "Bubba."

He is half Longhorn-Brangus and half Registered Black Angus.  It is his responsibility to manage the herd however he sees fit.  (Luckily, he's a gentle giant)

At the present time, the entire herd consists of two cow-and-calf combinations, one heifer, and six other happy cows.

Bubba is a very happy bull.
