Thirty acres of hay field, forty acres of oak timber, and twenty acres of natural grassland are home to abundant wildlife. In addition, two ponds are on the property, providing nearly eight acres under water. Both ponds are fully stocked with channel catfish, bluegill and large-mouthed bass.
As an "official" Texas wildlife habitat, we adhere to a wildlife management plan determined by the State of Texas. Providing food and water, forage areas, predatory control, and nesting habitat are all part of what makes the ranch a home for animals as well as the ranch inhabitants. No hunting is allowed on the ranch, although fishing (by family and friends only) is encouraged.
In May 2009, our resident female coyote (lame front leg, so doesn't venture very far) had a litter of six pups. Although not all survived, the mother and at least one of the pups are still seen on the ranch as recently as September 2009, roaming the ranch or playing in the tall grass.
Here is the sole survivor in October 2009. Truly a beautiful animal.
By far the strangest-looking critter on the ranch is the Nine-Banded Armadillo - the "official" mascot of the State of Texas.
In addition to being curious-looking, the 'possum is also a curious creature.
Kitty-doors are no match for this determined animal, much to the chagrin of our ranch cat, Adolph.
